The American Silver Eagle is one of the most iconic and widely recognised coins in the world, making it a highly sought-after item for both collectors and investors. As the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the American Silver Eagle was first introduced by the U.S. Mint on November 24, 1986. It is only available in the 1-troy ounce size, which carries a face value of one dollar.
The creation of the American Silver Eagle was driven by the federal government's plan to sell silver from the Defense National Stockpile during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1982, Senator James McClure introduced a bill to facilitate the disposal of this silver through the issuance of coins. The proposal was amended in 1985 by Representative Larry E. Craig, leading to the first production of the American Silver Eagle in 1986.
On the obverse side of the coin, the iconic Walking Liberty design is featured, with Lady Liberty striding forward, the sun rising behind her. Draped in the American flag, she carries an oak branch, symbolizing strength and independence. The word "LIBERTY" arcs across the top, and "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed to the left. The year of mintage is displayed below her feet.
The reverse side depicts a Heraldic Eagle, inspired by the U.S. Presidential Seal, with 13 stars above its head, representing the original colonies. The eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, while a banner in its beak reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM" ("Out of Many, One"). Surrounding the rim are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR."
