This coin celebrates the 90th anniversary of the discovery of the Golden Eagle gold nugget—so named for its striking resemblance to a bird of prey in flight.
Unearthed in January 1931 during the Great Depression by a 17-year-old son of prospector James Larcombe near the town of Widgiemooltha, 630km east of Perth, the Golden Eagle remains the largest gold nugget ever found in Western Australia, weighing an extraordinary 1,136oz (35.3kg).
Struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin features a detailed depiction of the legendary nugget set against a backdrop of radial lines. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s 'P' mintmark and the commemorative inscription: GOLDEN EAGLE 1931.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the 2021 Golden Eagle Nugget 1oz Silver Bullion Coin is limited to a worldwide mintage of just 30,000, with each coin housed in an individual acrylic capsule.
